This Christmas, I Pledge To Shop Local – Leicestershire Photographer

We live in a wonderful area of the world here in Charnwood. As a Leicestershire photographer, I get to explore some really beautiful countryside gems in the region on family photoshoots and at weddings. But that’s not all we have to be proud of here.

We boast some amazing bustling shopping communities too. Without the support of the residents however, they simply cannot continue to exist and, of course, at this time of year, we are all spending (maybe a little more than we should) in preparation to treat loved ones for Christmas.

Well, I’m not the first to have said this, and I truly hope I won’t be the last, but I’d like to spend my cash helping to build up local businesses this year. So I’ve done a little research which I thought I’d share with you, the discerning customer, so we can find everything we need for our gift purchasing this year.

Filigree Heart, Birstall

First up, I started in my own home village of Birstall. Filigree Heart is a positive Aladdin’s Cave of pretty goods and luxury gifts for the charming ladies in your life. Wife, girlfriend, mum, daughter, there is absolutely something in here for all of them. I’d be happy with any gift from here (nudge, nudge kids).

Owner of the store Shona Rattray says:

“Most people come in to buy gifts but can’t resist getting themselves a little something too.”

She has a wealth of Christmas goodies in at the moment too. I may have to visit again tomorrow.

Skinny Whistle, Quorn

Located on the High Street in Quorn, Skinny Whistle stocks a range of handcrafted sterling silver jewellery (made by owners Katie and Carole), gifts and homewares with an extensive range of candles. Their emphasis is on ethically sourced, organic products and their displays ooze warmth and homeliness. I didn’t want to leave!

I was also very impressed by their range of gifts for the gentleman. Both the modern hipster and older more refined males are catered for with this selection.

North’s, Rothley

Anyone with a taste for fine foods and a discerning palate must surely already be aware of North’s. I was certainly aware of them, but until last week, had never actually visited the store. WHAT WAS I THINKING??? I’ve wasted too long missing out on these delectable goodies. Don’t be like me!

North’s is a family-run Deli and Patisserie, headed by David North with his impressive 50 years’ experience in the industry. There are cheeses, wines, charcuterie, chocolates, jams and preserves (including North’s own brand), an impressive array of alcohol (some locally produced) and the exquisite desserts and celebration cakes, handmade by David’s son, Dominic.

Now stop dilly dallying and get there already! Go!

A Few More and a Leicestershire Photographer!

For children’s gifts, you could look at Baby Gosling in Syston or Odd John’s in Quorn and Swithland has some wonderful gingerbread house kits amongst their other edible gifts and hampers. Thrussington Village Store is also worth a visit and I can personally vouch for their tasty hot chocolate as a great break from the shopping.

There is always the very considerate offering of a gift voucher too. I know that the White Horse in Birstall are offering gift vouchers this year, so you could treat a lovely couple to a meal out. I can also highly recommend a nice massage at Blue Moon and of course, I am offering gift vouchers for photoshoots. Very smart they are too, even if I do say so myself.

Enjoy your shopping and the warm feeling you will get helping to support your local businesses this year. But most of all, I wish you all a wonderful, happy festive season.
